Morton Lake

The demands of my graduate studies are taking their toll, but I managed to sneak out this afternoon.  Thanks to Mr. Reid Wolcott for tagging along with me to one of my all time favorite childhood playgrounds.

See you out there,

State

Brokk007sm

This weekend marks the end of the winter swimming season, with the state finals in Laramie.  It also marks the end of my son's first full year as a swimmer.  Although he didn't qualify for any events, he made tremendous progress throughout.  More importantly, he loved every minute of it.  I am thankful that he has found something he loves to do during those long winter months and look forward to next season.

See you at the pool.

p.s.  Good luck to all the RSC state qualifiers!

Saying thanks

Tuckersm

This is a photo of my first bird dog, a German shorthair named Tucker.  My friend Carl gave him to me years ago when I was first getting in to bird hunting.
Funny how time passes.

Carl lived to be, as the bible says, 'a good old age'.  He mentored me as a teacher and coach, and was one of those fellas who forgot more about hunting and fishing than I'll ever learn.  But, I soaked up everything I could every time we were able to spend time together.  I'm grateful to be able to learn from him, and call him my friend.

I happened across this old photo, and figured it would be a fitting tribute.  I know he's up there finding all the good fishing holes and pheasant fields.
Until we meet again...

See you out there,

The Luckiest

I don't get many things right the first time
In fact, I am told that a lot
Now I know all the wrong turns, the stumbles and falls
Brought me here

And where was I before the day
That I first saw your lovely face?
Now I see it everyday
And I know

That I am
I am
I am
The luckiest

What if I'd been born fifty years before you
In a house on a street where you lived?
Maybe I'd be outside as you passed on your bike
Would I know?

And in a white sea of eyes
I see one pair that I recognize
And I know

That I am
I am
I am
The luckiest

I love you more than I have ever found a way to say to you

Next door there's an old man who lived to his nineties
And one day passed away in his sleep
And his wife; she stayed for a couple of days
And passed away

I'm sorry, I know that's a strange way to tell you that I know we belong
That I know

That I am
I am
I am
The luckiest

Christmas Music

One of the things I love about black and white photography is it appeals to a universal audience.  Music has this same effect.  Together, they seem the perfect combination.

Each year our school puts on many excellent band and choir concerts.  Sometimes getting "out there" means going inside to watch.

Storm Chasin'

I love this time of year.  Fall is just around the corner, the evenings are cooling off and the thunderstorms start showing up with more regularity.  Almost every evening you can pursue rain and clouds and lighting.  Depending on where the storm travels, your backdrop will be mountains or farmland, lakes or desert.  It can get pretty addicting, and I only wish I had more chances to chase.
This particular night happened to be a tale of two trips.  On the way out, I got to stop and capture the rain and sun wrapping the various peaks of the Wind River Range.  After shooting for a bit, I decided to head further west in hopes of gaining a better vantage point.  But on the way, the storm broke up and I was left empty handed....or so I thought.
As I headed back to town I noticed the dying storm had left the most remarkable yellow orange sunset.  I decided to stop at the next turnout to click a couple more in the dying light.  As fate would have it, the first available spot happened to be next to a lonely windmill.  You can see the results in the last few images.  Right place, right time.  I love it when that happens.
See you out there,

The devil is in the details

How many times have I went into the mountains seeking grand vistas and breathtaking expanses only to find beauty in the smaller things?  I guess that's one of the benefits of living where I do.  I am still blown away by the beauty and wonder of God's creation like the way the light reflects off the the Winds or streaks across Red Canyon.

But the cool thing about any place is being familiar enough with the big picture to allow yourself focus in on the details that otherwise slip by.  Those might be a spotted fawn or ground squirrel or water snake.  Or it just might be the look on my boys' faces as they discover it all with me.

See you out there,
